Core Properties
Dual-functional-group Chelation
Contains quinoline ring tertiary nitrogen (protonated in acidic medium to bind anions) and 8-hydroxyl group (dissociated in neutral/alkaline medium to bind metal cations), suitable for extraction in a wide pH range.
High Selectivity
Strong chelating capacity for gallium, copper, zinc, cadmium, germanium, cobalt and other metal ions; extremely low selectivity for monovalent ions (ratio around 5000:1).
Excellent Oil Solubility
Freely soluble in organic solvents such as kerosene and xylene, barely soluble in water, ideal for liquid-liquid extraction systems.
Main Applications (Mainly for Hydrometallurgy)
1. Gallium (Ga) Recovery
Selective extraction of gallium from alkaline Bayer-process mother liquor of bauxite, one of the mainstream industrial processes.
2. Separation of Copper/Zinc/Cadmium
Efficient extraction of copper, zinc and cadmium in acidic medium for ore leachate and wastewater treatment.
3. Germanium (Ge) Extraction
Separation and enrichment of germanium from acidic solutions of coal-fired ash, zinc smelting slag, etc.
4. Precious Metal & Rare-earth Separation
Used for separation and purification of cobalt, nickel and rare-earth elements (e.g. neodymium), often compounded with Cyanex272.
Working Mechanism
It extracts metals via dual mechanisms: cation exchange (neutral/weakly acidic environment) and anion exchange (strongly acidic environment). The metal-loaded organic phase can be stripped with dilute acid (e.g. 1–2M H₂SO₄) to realize metal recovery and extractant regeneration.
Safety & Precautions
Irritation: Irritating to skin, eyes and respiratory tract; operate with goggles, chemical-resistant gloves and fume hood.
Environmental hazard: Avoid direct discharge; dispose as hazardous waste.
Incompatibility: May decompose and lose efficacy under high temperature with strong oxidants, strong acids and strong alkalis.
Distinction Reminder
Kelex-100 (liquid extractant) ≠ Chelex 100 (solid chelating resin, Bio-Rad brand for molecular biology). They differ greatly in form and application.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
What is the CAS number and chemical formula of Kelex-100?
The CAS number is 73545-11-6, and its molecular formula is C20H29NO.
What are the primary hydrometallurgical applications of this product?
It is mainly used for Gallium (Ga) recovery from alkaline Bayer-process mother liquor, separation of copper/zinc/cadmium in acidic mediums, Germanium (Ge) extraction, and precious metal & rare-earth separation (such as cobalt, nickel, and neodymium).
How does the extraction mechanism work?
It functions via a dual mechanism: cation exchange in neutral/weakly acidic environments and anion exchange in strongly acidic environments. The metal-loaded organic phase is stripped using dilute acid (e.g., 1–2M H₂SO₄) for metal recovery and extractant regeneration.
Is Kelex-100 identical to Chelex 100?
No, they are completely different. Kelex-100 is a liquid extractant, whereas Chelex 100 is a solid chelating resin brand from Bio-Rad used primarily in molecular biology.
What are the storage and handling precautions?
It should be refrigerated at 2-8°C in sealed, dark conditions. During handling, use goggles, chemical-resistant gloves, and a fume hood to prevent irritation to the skin, eyes, and respiratory tract. Avoid mixing with strong oxidants, strong acids, or strong alkalis at high temperatures.
